The book ends with David telling Solomon in 22:19, “Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God.” That is how we need to start every day. They needed to know their future could be better than their past. You see, they had been in Babylonian captivity for 70 years. ![]() The stories of the past give us hope for the future. Remember your heritage! Don’t ever forget where God brought you from. The writer summarizes the main stories of the Old Testament and lists the main characters. This book traces genealogy all the way back to Adam, which is the first word in chapter 1:1. ![]() The context of this prayer is 1 Chronicles. In 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, we read, “Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, ‘Because I bore him in pain.’ And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested.” Why this prayer? There are three reasons: I want us to start the new year praying the prayer of Jabez. There is power when we pray scripture (John 15:7). In this new series on prayer we will study some of the great prayers of the Bible. You do not need your vision for 2020, you need God’s vision for your life that comes through prayer. In Acts 10, Peter went up on the rooftop to pray and God gave him a vision. For example, in Daniel 9 as Daniel was praying, the angel Gabriel appeared and gave him understanding of the vision. I searched the word “vision” in the Bible and was amazed at the connection between vision and prayer. We need more than human power, we need a higher power (John 3:30)! When I hear “2020,” I think vision/eyesight. ![]() Why? They rely on their strength and power. Every year people make New Year’s resolutions that they do not keep. ![]()
